Molly Brown:The Real Unsinkable

The new Titanic 3D opened almost three weeks ago and has made about $19.7 million. When you go to see the movie you will notice that the characters Rose and Jack are the main focus of the movie. Have you ever stopped and thought about the other people that were on that boat, for example Molly Brown?

Molly Tobin was born in a little white house on Palmyra street in Hannibal, just after the Civil War. She was Irish and her family had just immigrated to Missouri. While living in Missouri, her father was digging ditches for the gas company. At the age of 13, she sent out to find a job. At first she worked at a tobacco company, 12 hours six days a week.Shortly after she landed a job at the Park Hotel.

Shortly after Molly turned 18, she married 32 year old, J.J. Brown. While she was still in her teens, she was debating whether or not to marry a rich man, or settle with a poor man with which she was very happy. Molly then said after years of deciding, she married J.J. Brown. Molly Brown said “Finally, I decided that I’d be better off with a poor man whom I loved than with a wealthy one whose money had attracted me."

Years went by before she was able to return to America. Back in America she had an ailing grandson, she was only 44 at the time. There was a last minute sale for tickets to board a boat also known as the Titanic.      As she boarded the boat she would talk for hours about how much she would miss her family. All was well until one starry night. April 12, 1912 was the date that the captains would find out that "the unsinkable" was going down.

Passengers were falling asleep and getting their children in the bed. As soon as they were in the bed, they heard a long, loud, banging noise. Molly was the first to get her things ready to get off the ship. Packing $500 and putting on as many clothes as she possibly. When she got to the deck, boats were loading and leaving. Women and children were the top priority of the Titanic.

Molly was lucky enough to board the third boat. Shortly after leaving, she tried to persuade the drivers to turn around and pick up the people floating in the water. Three hours too late, they turned around.

As you think about the Titanic, think about Molly Brown and her family. Molly made it safe to her grandson. The movie Titanic will surely make you rethink 3D and the way you saw the Titanic and the people who were on it.

    1. Yes April I saw the show. I would have loved to be on the Titanic to meet Molly Brown in person. The only thing I saw that really confused me was the fact that Rose told Jack she would never let go. She then let go.
